Porcelain originated in China during the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC) and was a main export, prized for its beauty and durability. It slowly spread to other East Asian countries, Europe and the rest of the world. Chinese porcelain was highly prized in the West for their exotic artwork, bright and beautiful colours and artistic pieces which were durable and useful. Throughout the centuries and the various dynasties — Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), Sui Dynasty (581-618AD), Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), Song Dynasty (960-1279AD), porcelain reached new heights of artistry and production. By the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD), porcelain wares were exported to Europe and the coveted blue-and-white porcelain wares became some of the most well-known Chinese porcelain art styles during this era. Today, the humble porcelain has grown from homewares, decorative works of art to jewellery collections and is an integral part of everyday life.
