chicken-and-kitten

Lately, I have been thinking about Valentine’s Day and all the lovey-dovey gestures that flow from this occasion. Gifts and flowers, wine & dine, romantic holidays and other sweet surprises await those who celebrate.

Love is indeed all around and even for the most jaded of us, there is still a spark of love that we can share. Think of the other types of love in our lives — your love for reading, cooking, singing, dancing, sports, painting, drawing or photography. Whatever your love is, I say, take time to celebrate that too and find a new way to spread that love to someone you care about.

Simple but personal acts that come from the heart and totally surprises your recipient, now that is a gift you won’t find in the stores and a joy to keep.

1]  Cooked & delivered — a home-cooked meal is a natural labour of love for the time and preparation involved. Surprise someone with your specialty dish and Uber-deliver it with your handwritten message. Or show and tell for someone who is eager to learn the ropes of preparing that favourite dish, the one everyone raves about.

2]  Painting & drawing — frame a painting or drawing from your collection and add in a personalized message of love, sign, seal and deliver.

3]  Books & reading — enjoy a quiet afternoon of reading with someone who shares your love for books. Or read poems to someone who may be recovering in bed.

4]  Music & singing — invite a friend to a night out of listening to both your favourite songs performed by a lounge singer or go to a fun concert.

5]  Photography — take photos of a favourite subject for that friend and be creative with funny captions that will make her laugh, each time she looks at them.

6]  Dancing — learn a new dance or dance the night away with fellow dancers.

Whether you choose to pamper yourself, someone you love, treasure and care about, make this Valentine’s Day different and do something unexpected, thoughtful and lasting. The world seems to be somewhat chaotic at the moment and everywhere you look, there’s seems to be less of a good thing. It’s a nice place to start.
